  I doubt you're going to find any exact recordings without him playing. You could maybe find similar progressions of the same song (most of his songs are well known tunes) but there will be difference in styles and chords.

  You'll probably just have to play along with him. It's a good way to learn the inflections he does while playing.

Ok well at work I listen to the music they play and every time I work I hear this one song that I love and really want. I have narrowed it down to it being one of Kenny G's songs. There are no lyrics. But the song is a saxophone and guitar playing. At the start of the song the guitar plays like 4 notes then the saxophone comes in and plays the same 4 notes.

Alto Saxophone students and Jazz?
Hearing all the cool Jazzy-Jazz.

I play the French Horn right now at my school, and to me it seems like the most boring instrument. While playing the French Horn I play the Alto Saxophone. I know how to play all my 12 scales; sharps at a faster speed than flats.

I know so many good artists that play the Alto Saxophone or other saxophones, that can play so many cool, amazing songs; but, it's hard. I like to listen to Kenny G, or Jessy Jay music. They both play very well. I recently was taught the G Blues scale, and I created my own Big Band song, It sounds just like one song from that time. I love hearing the great sounds and songs that can be played on the Alto Saxophone. I want this to be an instrument that I play for a long time. I want to be really good. (Going into high school)

So, my questions:
1. What do you recommend for me to play music like ones in the Big Band era? Should I learn all the other blues scales? (When I learned the G Blue scale, old Jazz just appeared to be coming out; I could play so well by myself. I knew how to make it "Jazz-like".
2. What do you recommend for me to play music like high school jazz band music? How can I get really good?
3. Is there any tips you can offer? Tips about how to play well, or what I should learn to be in Jazz band?

  1. stop listening to Kenny G thats the wrong style of jazz for you. Listen to Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Paul Desomond, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, "Cannonball" Adderley, (all sax player). Maynard Ferguson, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellignton, Clifford Brown, Wyton Marsalis, Arturo Sandoval (trumpets), Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Fats Waller, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, McCoy Tyner,Chick Corea (piano), Buddy Rich, Louis Prima, Gene Krupa (drummers) Benny Goodman (clarinet)....this shall suffice

  2. this is a btch. Learn every scale in ALL KEYS!
  learn all your major scales, then learn each mode of each scale (7 total modes for the 12 scales, 84 modes total)
  your minor variations (natural minor is included w/ modes its the 6th mode. learn the harmonic and melodic minor)
  the diminished variations (the whole-half, half-whole, and half diminished)
  augmented/whole tone
  pentatonic (major, minor, this is the same thing as your blues scale w/o the tritone (#4/b5), blues)

  this is an awesome start if you learn all these.

  3. work on you ear training, and try to copy licks from other artist and transpose them in every key.

I am also playing the Alto Saxophone. I used to think that the Alto Saxophone sounded so cool, hearing Kenny G., and Jesee Jay play. I always think I could play something half as good as that: but, no, I can't. When I'm in the 8th month playing the Alto Saxophone I got bored, because I couldn't play. How can I stick to the Alto Saxophone, be a "Wowing" player, while being in the hardest high school program, IB?

I want to continue over this summer. Right now I don't have time to practice the instrument I will quit and the Alto Saxophone. I still do have lessons for the Alto Saxophone.

Any tips on how to be really good at reading hard, fast music, and getting better on the Alto Saxophone would be good.

  Just so you know, Kenny G plays Soprano sax. You've only been playing Sax for eight months, you can't expect to sound anything near a pro. Guess what? I am a freshman in the IB program and have played alto sax for 5 years, soprano sax for two years, and bari sax for 1 year. It will take many years and a lot of work to become an amazing sax player. I am currently first chair in the highest level wind ensemble at my school, I beat out all of the sophomores, juniors, and seniors. I am also playing soprano sax in the pit orchestra and bari sax in the montgomery county, maryland junior honors band. How to get better at Alto sax in general? Go to your private lessons and practice A LOT. As to reading music well, that takes time and experience. Also, a lot of hard music is very slow, and you are exposed so your tone has to be perfect. It seems to me that all you want to learn how to do is play fast, but that's is not what talent is. You have to be able to hold long notes, keep a good tone, and play vibrato (but you're not yet advanced enough to be playing vibrato). You have to make time to practice, or you will never have any talent. Even with all of my experience, I can not play at a professional level. You can't expect to play like a pro with less than a year of experience. I make time for practicing at least an hour a day and completing all of my work for IB. It can be done, it just takes effort. Suck it up and work hard, It will take years, but if you work hard enough and have the natural talent, you will one day find yourself playing beautifully.

  PS- the piece you attached wasn't even that advanced... I could play that after two years of playing.

  It sounds to me that you just aren't interested in the sax. The difference between you and the famous musicians is that they enjoy what they do. Ask yourself this: is there an instrument that I like that I would be willing to take the time to play? Practice is the only answer I can give.

I am a sophmore in high school. I've been playing the saxophone for a little over 5 years and i have recently started reading snare music. Very soon i will start to play the viola and the piano. My dream is to become an orchestral composer for movies to make soundtracks for those movies like John Williams, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. Or I would like to be a jazz artist like Kenny G, Paul Taylor, or Dave Koz. What I would like to know is how would someone go about becoming this kind of composer? What colleges would be good, what instruments would i need to learn, what qualifications would i need, and what could i do to improve my musical skills, including playing and reading?

  You're awesome! I totally want to do that too. I'm a freshman in high school, and I've been playing the trumpet for 5 years... I play piano too...
  I would do some research on the best musical colleges in your state, OR, if you want to go big, in the country. I'm pretty sure you'd have to know how to read all woodwind and brass music, strings, piano, and percussion music. You wouldn't necessarily have to learn every instrument, but it would probably be good to know about the workings of each musical instrument. I don't know much about woodwinds, but I do know, that if you can play one brass instrument, you can play all of them, you just have to learn to read the music. (well except trombone, it has a slide instead of valves.)

  And percussion music isn't too hard to learn, just rhythms, but you have to learn form and different styles.

  Piano music is similar to trumpet music, I learned trumpet so quickly BECAUSE I could read piano music.

  But I have absolutely NO idea about strings. I've tried reading it, and failed utterly.

  I think you could probably do it. I really think you could, considering you've already started now. You have a lot of time to learn how to do these things, and don't forget college!!!

  Yeah, I know I didn't help much. I want to become a director of a college marching band, so I'm going to have to learn similar things. Good luck!

can someone help me find the name of a song?
I have been trying to track down for a long time the name of a particular song. I will do my best to describe it because I cannot track it down. If I knew the name I could find out very easily. It is an instrumental piece of music, although I'm not aware if it was originally instrumental or not. I would describe it as primarily a romantic piece of music that I have heard often at wedding receptions. I have heard it in other contexts as well such as in TV commercials. I believe it is a well-known song since I have heard it many times in the last 15 to 20 years. I was thinking it was by Kenny G. There is a song he does that I would say is similar in style. I guess you could probably call it pop jazz, and part of the song does incorporate a saxophone. Other instruments include piano and I believe strings. Have I given enough clues? Firstly I need to say a huge thanks to all of those who answered my question a few weeks back, whether or not 21 was to old to start learning piano. I took your advice & I'm on the look out for a good tutor in the meantime however, I got an absolutely amazing book, which enabled me to pick up all the basics I had learned as a kid in one day & I'm already playing lots of great songs, actually I'm totally addicted to the piano at the moment & I'm getting such a buzz from making some progress on it at last, I wish I was as enthusiastic about studying for my university degree Any way thanks again everyone, I'll stop babbling & get the this question. I've just began learning about rests and silences and what they can add to music however, the first piece I have to play which includes various different lengths of silence have notes in the bars for the right hand & the signs for rests in the left hand bars, surely then the silence won't be noticed? Any explanations?

  The left hand does not play ALL the time; not does the right hand play ALL the time. That is the beauty of the piano ; left and right hands can do different things to achieve different effects.
  Sure , you do not really hear the silence of the left hand but its absence accentuates what the right hand is doing and, in a way, you do "hear" the silence.

  -Colored in with just a staff = quarter note (1/4 of a measure if you're in 4/4 time)
  -middle C is just that, the C that's in the middle of the piano.
  -a standard 88-key piano starts on A on the very left and goes up to a C at the very right

  edit: I agree, hard to teach something you don't know. Maybe take some lessons yourself?

An electronic keyboard is an ELECTRONIC device that produces sound via electronic processes though chips, transistors and etc. But, when it comes to their functionality, they're just THE SAME. They only differ on their physical composition. ALL sheet music played on piano can be play on keyboards.

  Treble clef notes (the musical staff that has a big curly S type thing next to it): bottom line - E; next to bottom line - G; next line up - B; next line - D; next line (top line) - F
  It's easier to remember these by using the phrase Every Good Boy Does Fine - the first letters of the words are the notes as you walk up the lines.
  bottom space - F; next space - A; next space - C; next space - E (the word FACE is spelled as you walk up the spaces)

  Bass clef notes (the one with the half-heart type shape and two dots on the right): bottom line - G; next line - B; next line - D; next line - F; next line (top line) - A
  bottom space - A; next space - C; next space - E; next space - G

  That's the basics of it. Also, just watch out for #s and flats. . . miss one of those and the note will sound horrible!

  As for getting it free, keep in mind that sheet music is no different from a book -- it's protected by copyright law, and somebody had to pay to publish it.

  Yes, piano sheet music is the same as keyboard sheet music.

  The only difference is that some keyboards have less keys than a regular piano.

  For example there are keyboards with as few as 37 keys, some with 49, 61, and so on. A traditional piano has 88 keys.

  You can run into a problem if you have sheet music that wants you to play a low C but your keyboard doesn't go that low. This is rare but it can happen.

  If you have a full 88 key keyboard then your fine.

  The above website will have a midi file for that song. You can print the sheet music from the midi file If you have a program (there are some free programs available I believe).

  Word of warning, midi files don't always print out sheet music with the notes arranged in the easiest way for you to play them (i.e. put more notes on treble clef instead of bass even though it makes more sense for left hand to be playing the notes). How well it prints out depends on the song itself and on how good of a notation program you have for converting the midi (the best are of course the most expensive). Your friend can probably figure things out though with what is printed. Midis aren't great with guitar parts unless the person who created the midi was a guitar player (too many different ways to play the same notes on a guitar so you may not get the best combinations for ease of play on a midi). I usually look up guitar tabs online in addition to the midi file for the drums and keyboard parts.

  I guess you could. Many musicians play by ear. However, that's not how I roll. I would say that you should learn to read music if you are serious about becoming a musician (or if you already are one). I play the cello, and reading music lets me play anything I want. Same goes for the piano. Reading sheet music opens up a world of music you wouldn't know how to play otherwise.

  Your best bet is to find it using the website www.911 tabs.com, (where you can search for the band and see a list of all the songs of that band people have tabbed out), or watching people do covers/tutorials on youtube.

  Usually, there will be the keyboard part included in the guitar pro files on 911 tabs but if you don't have the program guitar pro its gonna be a lot harder. However, the only drawback is that guitar pro costs money to get... unless you manage to get it another way like searching "how to get guitar pro 5 free" on youtube and following the steps in a video.

  Personally i think guitar pro is the best way for learning these things, I know becuase i have used it to learn keyboard for the devil wears prada and bass for between the buried and me. I hope this helps.

  It's all the same. okay for example in your G-clef we have E-G-B-D-F. the notes stops on the F, so what come's next is G. You should follow through your piano. so the next notes should be F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G-and so forth. It's difficult at first but you just need some practice. You can try writing on the sheet itself there should be lines on those far away notes you can count and read it then when you get to the note just write what note it should be like C.

  it's just like adding another staff.

  The previous answer that said you need a teacher is wrong. Anyone can learn to read music without a teacher. Unless of course they're blind or something. The easiest way would probably be to buy a beginner piano book and it will explain or atleast most do. But first I'll sort of explain for you. The basic or natural notes are A, B, C ,D, E, F, G. These are the white keys. The black notes are sharps and flats which are pitches in between the naturals or white keys. A sharp sign looks like this- # and a flat looks like this- b. Sheet music has five lines. A note on the bottom line is E. Move up to the space abve that line and you have a G, up to the next line you have an A, then B, etc.
  Remember after G you start back over at A.

How do I identify a music piece w no title or artist?
I can't download the piece. I have tried listening to multiple tracks at iTunes. It is a slow Kenny G saxaphone sounding piece, with piano. It's got a definite beginning: Duh, dah, duh, . . . duh dah duh . . . over and over. Where does one go on internet?
I can download it, I just can't to this site. Got any alternatives?????
I have an iPhone app, Soundout or off, it was not successful identifying the track, I uploaded to YouTube, but I don't think it is going to show up, will see. The track does seem to have a Latin Jazz sound.
Shazam was unable after several tries to identify.

I like a lot of different types of music. (: Though many teens I know don't like classical, I do. I'm also really into jazz, so if you could maybe give me some download links to good jazzy songs, I'd really appreciate it.
I like some alternative, a bit of Rocket To The Moon, Neon Trees, etc. I only like a few indie songs.
I do like pop, but not all of it. I hate rap, it's sickening (in my opinion). No hip-hop either.

I'd really like some suggestions of classical songs I can actually DOWNLOAD on a site like 4shared or mediafire.... preferably with clarinets playing? (: I play clarinet, so I think it's really cool when I hear professional clarinetists.

  I doubt you're going to find any exact recordings without him playing. You could maybe find similar progressions of the same song (most of his songs are well known tunes) but there will be difference in styles and chords.

  You'll probably just have to play along with him. It's a good way to learn the inflections he does while playing.

  Chet Atkins is one of the greatest guitarists of all time and usually did instrumental stuff. If you like Atkins, you may also like Jerry Reed and Buster B. Jones.

  Also, he doesn't usually play mainly instrumentals, but modern country guitarist Brad Paisley released an album back in November called PLAY. That album had 11 great instrumentals on it. And Paisley went placed most country guitarists wouldn't dare to go--surf rock, blues, rock, etc. PLAY really shows just how versatile Paisley is as a guitarist. In fact, he seems to be a musical chameleon with how well he can play ANY genres with ease!

  Danny Gatton was another great guitarist. He was able to play many genres well and I've often called Brad Paisley another version of Danny Gatton, when it comes to guitar.

  There's also a female bassist by the name of Tal Wilkenfeld whose stuff I believe is completely instrumental.

  If you love jazz guitar, you'll want to check out Wes Montgomery, Lenny Breau and Mike Stern.

  For rock guitar masters, check out Eric Johnson, Steve Vai and Paul Gilbert.

  If you want country guitar, check out Brad Paisley, Brent Mason, Albert Lee, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed.

  For acoustic guitar, check out Monte Montgomery.

  Keep in mind, however, that not all the artists I've mentioned stick strictly to instrumental work. Also, Brent Mason is a session guitarist who has an album which is out-of-print, but also receyly released an album with his brother and drummer, Randy Mason.

  I was a wedding DJ for a couple of years and I can say the music makes a big difference on whether your reception will be a huge success or blah. Nobody will remember the colors or the food. What they will remember is grandpa doing the chicken dance. What you are thinking of is GREAT music for the dining part, so I think you should go to last.fm and put in kenny g and see what similar artists it brings up. I usually played Michael Buble and light jazz. But when it's time to get the party started, I can tell you people love it when the couple allows a DJ to play popular songs, teach line dances, and MC some games. Good luck!

I have been trying to track down for a long time the name of a particular song. I will do my best to describe it because I cannot track it down. If I knew the name I could find out very easily. It is an instrumental piece of music, although I'm not aware if it was originally instrumental or not. I would describe it as primarily a romantic piece of music that I have heard often at wedding receptions. I have heard it in other contexts as well such as in TV commercials. I believe it is a well-known song since I have heard it many times in the last 15 to 20 years. I was thinking it was by Kenny G. There is a song he does that I would say is similar in style. I guess you could probably call it pop jazz, and part of the song does incorporate a saxophone. Other instruments include piano and I believe strings. Have I given enough clues? For the record, I regard Mr. Gorelick (his birth name) as a far better businessman than jazz musician (if you consider him as such from the perspective of the jazz mainstream rather than from the view of the modern marketing abomination known as "smooth jazz"); he is to jazz music what McDonald's restaurants are to the fine dining. I'd like to hear him "with the gloves off" playing some classic jazz form like bebop, but that isn't likely- let's see you alienate the record buying public just to satisfy the curiosity of those who prefer mainstream jazz.
  Unfortunately for those who love the jazz mainstream (usually regarded as ending with hard bop; many consider the rise of the avante garde the death knell of the jazz mainstream), the word "jazz" has been co-opted by those who market music (not unlike what has happened to the labels "R&B" and "country") and as a result its meaning has been changed wholesale in the estimation of the masses who have to be told what is good. One lesson life teaches me over and over again is to choose your battles wisely; it's not your job to change anyone, and true change originates from within. Mr. Shaw states that it is his responsibility to his community to do for it what ever he can. I agree. I firmly believe that aiding ones community, in however small form, is an action to strive for. Doing something good to benefit a community can stir someone else to do good as well. During my volunteer work at a small music camp in Trenton, it was a little girl named Penzi who really taught me the meaning of responsibility to ones community and made me truly understand the meaning of giving back.
Penzi, an adorable little girl, about five years old, was in my chamber music group when I volunteered as a junior counselor. Her talkative, cheerful, and quick to please attitude made her a joy to help with notes and reading sheet music. She often helped me with dealing with the very small children. She' play games with them and be patient with them as we'd show them how to use the xylophone or maracas during their breaks. Her good mood could spread through a room faster than it took a hundred campers to eat a hundred egg salad sandwiches.
One early morning, just before the group of beginner violin classes started, I wonderingly asked her, “How are you so happy all the time?” It was almost 7:30 in the morning, much too early for one to be smiling in the midst of twelve children tuning twelve completely different A's. The lack of air conditioning made the room sweltering hot, and a few flies rested on the cases of busy practicing children. Her mature answer surprised me. Her big mahogany colored eyes patiently rested upon my tired and somewhat frazzled self, while I took a break from putting band aids on scrapes and keeping campers in their seats. “Miss Anna,” she said, using my nickname with the little ones, “I'm happy because I like to make other people happy. You said that helping you with the youngest kids makes your job easier. I just wanna help you. Like a thank you.” Now it really made me think, this little girl, though only five, was trying to give back to the community, our camp, by being happy. Penzi's responsibility was to ensure that she was kind and cheerful to the people who helped and taught her. And her push to be gentle and compassionate made difference in the day of all the campers.
No matter what it is that you contribute to your community, you can never underestimate the effect it has on everyone around you. It is our responsibility to ensure that we try, just like Penzi, to change the way our community is for the better, even in the smallest way possible. After she spoke to me, I realized how much my volunteering effected her, to the point where she wanted to reciprocate.
Even though it was tiring and hot, I saw that volunteering to help kids from Trenton learn instruments they probably wouldn't have gotten to play, was (and still is) my contribution to the community. I'm not changing the world, but something as small as taking time out of my summer to practicing scales and Somewhere Over the Rainbow with Penzi, had such an affect as to prompt her to want to do something in return. It's like my new responsibility, and Mr. Shaw, you certainly are correct, it is a privilege.

  As a fellow 13-year-old poet, I have to say this is wonderful. Personally, I don't rhyme because I always end up with "moon" and "June", but you seem to have a really good grasp on it. You could try using some more literary devices like some alliterations, but your personification is fabulous. The quotes might not be necessary, though.
